Nanuza Luiza de MENEZES

General anatomy research on neotropical flora (flowering plants), mainly monocotyledons of "campos rupestres". Anatomy of thickened underground systems.

Full Professor
In the "Departamento de Botânica" since 1963.

My researches and contributions have not only been centred on the family Velloziaceae (anatomy, taxonomy and phylogeny) but also on other families of the communities from the mountains of Central Brazil. The anatomical studies were done with vegetative and reproductive organs, with a special interest in flower vascularization. In the last five years I have been interested on thickened underground systems, looking for the presence of rhizophores, a new interpretation for old structures. This interest started discovering that the so-called "stilt roots" of Rhizophora mangle were, actually, cauline. My studies demonstrate that plants with rhizophores have a bipolar caulinar system: aerial branches bearing leaves and basal branches bearing roots.
